Growing Avocado

Growing an avocado plant may seem out of place on a primitive skills blog, but I thought it was interesting none the less. I know a few people who do this, and one thing they report is if you put it outside too soon, the squirrels will come and eat it, so I plan on keeping mine indoors for the most part, and hopefully get some nice fruit from it.

It's really quite easy, simply put three toothpicks in the thickest part of the pit,put it on top of a glass with the bottom of the pit about a half inch in the water, give it sunlight and keep the water level up and let it do the rest.

Hey, I really enjoy your blog. Good luck with the avocado, they can be tricky but fun to grow.

That would be great. Maybe inspire me to make posts more often.

i enjoy your blog too. Avocado growing is, to me, not so much a primitive skill, more a miracle! I've been trying since i was a young lad and i've never even got a sprout! let us know how you get on.

Do you think having it so close to the window in winter may prevent it from shooting?

Hey there, I ran across your blog while searching out info on Avocado pollination. Just thought I would leave a little encouragement for you. I started growing an avocado months ago from a seed, and it is now 18 inches tall! It has 7 leaves, and it's starting to get some texture on the bottom of the "trunk" like bark. Keep it up! It totally works! I have pictures of the whole process, and was going to load one of the latest on here, but I'm not sure how to do that. Anyway, great blog!

Owen, good luck with the avocado. I started mine last year (Aug. 2007) and started getting roots after about 3 1/2 weeks followed by a small shoot. The shoot never really took off and I thought it had died - anyway I forgot about for quite a while and was surprised last week to find about 12" of growth and a glass full of roots! I will be planting in potting soil this week.
